ABU marks World Environmental Day with symposium, tree planting

Ahmadu Bello University has marked this year's World Environmental Day with a symposium and a flag-off of one million trees planting.

Christened 'Making Peace with Nature to Restore the Planet', the symposium is simply to support the 2021 main theme: 'Ecosystem Restoration'.

The event, which took place in the Samaru Main Campus of the University today, was preceded by a radio talk on environment on ABU FM radio last Saturday.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kabiru Bala, who chaired the symposium at the institution's Assembly Hall, explained that the ABU Green Belt initiative was in response to the challenges of deforestation and soil-erosion as well as a sustained strategy on maintaining the fragile ecosystem.

Prof Bala also said that the University must sensitize the immediate and neighbouring communities to actively participate as vanguards in the protection of the ecology.

Prof A E Ikpokonte of Department of Geology; Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Prof I A Dabo; and Director, Institute for Development Research and Training, Prof Binta Abdulkarim, were among the six speakers who presented papers on different issues relating to environment.

The planting of one million trees was launched shortly after the symposium by the Vice-Chancellor along with some management staff of the University.
